Spy alert: WhatsApp update strongly recommended
Why an update is more important now than ever before.

A current security vulnerability in WhatsApp is making headlines. It primarily affects users of iPhones and Macs. The dangerous part: attackers were able to spy on devices through this vulnerability - without any clicks on links or attachments.
What’s behind it?
The vulnerability allowed so-called zero-click attacks. That means you didn’t have to do anything at all - simply using WhatsApp was enough to give attackers an entry point. While the attacks targeted specific individuals such as journalists or activists, the underlying vulnerability existed in all iOS and macOS versions.
What should you do now?
Install updates immediately - both for WhatsApp and your operating system.
- iOS version: update to the latest available release.
- WhatsApp versions: at least v2.25.21.73 (iOS) or v2.25.21.78 (Mac).
- If you want extra security, enable Apple’s Lockdown Mode. You can activate it under Settings > Privacy & Security > Lockdown Mode. Once enabled, your device blocks many potential attack vectors (e.g. message attachments, unknown FaceTime calls, complex websites). Less convenience, but maximum protection.
If you received an alert directly from Apple, security experts recommend resetting your device to factory settings and then installing all updates immediately.
And let’s be honest
Updates are annoying, no doubt about it. But they’re the best defense against exactly these kinds of attacks. So when WhatsApp or your iPhone nags you about an update - don’t swipe it away. Just let it run. Your future self will thank you.
